Meet Senator Lisa Murkowski

About Senator Lisa Murkowski:

DOB: May 22, 1957 (64 years old)
Education: Batchelor's Degree in Economics from Georgetown University and her law degree from Willamette College of Law
Career Before Public Office: Attorney and Alaska House of Representatives member
Family: Daughter of Alaska's eighth governor and has five siblings
Religious Background:  Catholic

                               Tenure

Lisa Murkowski had an unusual entrance to the senate. Murkowski was not elected but appointed to her position by her father, Frank, when he became Alaska's eighth governor in 2002. (Alaska Journal) She served out the final two years of her father's term and won her re-election campaign in 2004. In 2010, she lost in the primary to Joe Miller. However, she still won the seat as a write-in candidate and is only the second write-in Senator in our nation's history to be elected. (The Washington Post)This is very important, in my opinion, as it is a true testament to her popularity in Alaska if over 100,000 people wrote her name on the ballot. Murkowski again won in 2016, but this time not by a write-in winning the primary and the general election. (alaska.gov) She is up for re-election again this year.

                            Experience

Lisa worked as an attorney from 1989 to 1998. In 1998, she held public office in the Alaska House of Representatives for the first time. She was a representative in Alaska's house from 1998 until 2002, elected for the second time in 2000. (congress.gov)
